This year between Christmas and New Year’s, when the world is asleep, a sleeping giant will arise in Zurich. It is an old, respectable and loyal giant that took a five-year-nap after 49 years of constant fighting and spectacle. For 49 years, cycling’s greatest and most daring, popular heroes and some old war horses among them, took his back as a battlefield in their struggle for honour and stardom. For 49 years, people came to witness the hard-fought races, sometimes ugly, even bloody. Each of these 49 years, only one team could win the spectacle of the Six Day race and it is said that often more money was paid to the underdogs than to the winners.
Tired after 49 years, the giant was brought to sleep by his two tiny but untiring little helpers Urs Freuler and Max Hürzeler. Two man who had both been riding on the giants neck - first as popular heroes and world champions, later as old war horses - when the three of them were still young.
Now the two little helpers consider the giant has rested long enough. They aroused their gigantic friend from his sleep and his awakening shall evoke the most impressive and bodacious Six Day race ever: The 50th Zurich Six Days at the legendary Hallenstadion.
As the giant has slept for quite a long time, his friends have decided to come up with some extraordinary surprises for him. One of their ideas was to invite people to ride on his back, the sort the giant has never seen nor heard of before.
This is why they asked for the Bike Messengers to take part in the races in honour of the giant.
Consequently, our races will be held on the giants back, our feats will be cheered on his grandstands, and the best of us will be mentioned within the same breath as the ancient titans of cycling.
Do whatever you have to do before. Deliver heavy in December and ease your conscience by visiting Mom and Dad on Christmas.
